For nearly a decade, Samsung has been the only major brand consistently launching Android tablets — and now, it seems Apple might finally be taking notes. Two years ago, Samsung introduced water resistance in its premium tablets, and that move may have inspired Apple to bring the same feature to its upcoming iPad Mini.
Apple’s Next iPad Mini Could Be Water-Resistant
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple’s next-generation iPad Mini (codename J510) could arrive early next year with a redesigned, water-resistant body. Apple is reportedly testing a new casing similar to the one used in recent iPhones, making the compact iPad Mini more durable against splashes and spills.
The report also hints at a big audio redesign. Instead of using traditional speaker holes, Apple may adopt vibration-based sound technology, allowing the tablet to produce audio without openings. This not only boosts durability but also gives the device a cleaner look.
Samsung Set the Trend Years Ago
Samsung was the first to offer IP68-rated water and dust resistance on its tablets, starting with the Galaxy Tab S9 lineup in mid-2023. The company later expanded the feature to the Tab S9 FE and Tab S10 series, making rugged, water-resistant tablets a standard in its ecosystem.
If Apple’s plan succeeds, it’ll be a rare case where the iPad follows a feature pioneered by Samsung — and that could make the next iPad Mini one of Apple’s most exciting upgrades yet.
